Hugs & Kisses
“Blue or Green?”
Jen laughed, but answered anyway. “Green,” she said, smiling. She kicked her feet back and forth in the water as she thought of her next question. It was a beautiful warm and sunny afternoon, and she was pleased Ronon had suggested the south pier.
She wasn’t even sure how their little game had started, but she was enjoying it immensely. “Pink or Red?”
Ronon snorted and turned to look at her. She couldn’t help but let out another giggle; of course he wasn’t going to pick pink.
Ronon smiled with her and leaned back on his elbows, face angled toward the sun, eyes closed. His feet were drifting in lazy circles in the water while he thought of what to say for his turn. Jen was more than happy to sit there and watch him. They were in no hurry, and she was feeling more relaxed than she had in weeks.
“Running or sparring?” He finally asked. He opened his eyes and looked at her, betraying the underlying mischief there. He knew her answer just as well as she did.
“What do you think?” She replied good-naturedly.
Ronon shrugged, still looking like he was up to no good.
“Hugs or kisses?” Jen found herself asking without thinking, for some reason the question had popped into her mind.
Ronon raised one eyebrow, obviously surprised, but he didn’t seem uncomfortable. Jen would have thought for sure she knew his answer, but his response came as a shock to her.
“Hugs,” he stated without hesitation.
“Really?” She questioned, unable to help herself.
He nodded, still staring intently at her.
“I just, I would have thought…” She felt her cheeks warm as memories from the night before flashed through her mind. She had no doubt Ronon could guess her train of thought, and she was thankful he didn’t say anything about it.
“I like kissing,” he said, unabashedly. “But hugs are better.”
“Why?” Jen was genuinely curious now. It wasn’t that she didn’t understand the allure of a good hug, she did. But this was Ronon, probably the toughest and most definitely the sexiest man she knew.
“They’re comforting,” he said softly as he turned his gaze to look out over the ocean.
Jen listened attentively as Ronon spoke.
“You get to savor the moment, etch the feelings into your memory.” He paused for a moment. “And there’s nothing like knowing the person you love is in your arms, safe.”
Jen felt a surge of emotion. She knew that Ronon was a sweet and caring person underneath the rough exterior, but she hadn’t expected to hear him say anything like that.
Reacting to his words, she closed the small distance between them, wrapping her arms around him and squeezing tightly. He smiled softly and nuzzled his face into her hair as he returned the embrace.
She smiled against his chest and leaned against him. Then she whispered, “I like hugging better too.”
